Rainbows form when sunlight refracts in raindrops (spheroid shaped, not teardrop shaped, as commonly thought) and comes back into your eyes. Because longer wavelengths of light refract less (index of refraction of red light in water is 1.331, while that of violet light is 1.338 ), white light is separated into a spectrum, and these colors come back from different angles in the form of a radiant, breathtaking rainbow. Primary bows come from one reflection inside the droplet, while secondary bows result from two reflections. In between the two arcs, the sky may look darker than usual. This is because light undergoes total internal reflection. Rainbows are actually full circles, but the ground blocks the bottom half of it, and you can only see rainbows when the sun is less than 42 degrees above the horizon. However, if you go on an airplane or climb a mountain, with a bit of luck, you can see the full circle! When raindrops sizes are small enough (more common with the convective showers we get in Palo Alto), supernumerary bows can also emerge.
