After Malcolm’s assassination in 1965, his teachings deeply influenced a generation of Black nationalists who sought to turn his ideas into institutional nation-building. In 1968, activists formally proclaimed the Republic of New Afrika declaring independence for a Black nation in the U.S. South (primarily Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina).
The Republic of New Afrika (RNA) adopted core Malcolm principles:
• Self-determination as a people
• Land as the material basis of nationhood
• Self-defense and community control
• Reparations for centuries of enslavement and exploitation
• International diplomacy with African and Third World nations
For this reason, Malcolm X is widely honored within the New Afrikan Independence Movement as the Ideological Father of New Afrika — the thinker whose political framework made the RNA possible.

The Obadele Brothers and Nation-Building
Key founders of the RNA included the Obadele brothers:
• Imari Obadele
• Gaidi Obadele
Imari Obadele in particular carried Malcolm’s nationalist analysis into structured political programs, drafting the RNA’s Declaration of Independence and advancing the demand for reparations and territorial sovereignty.
The Obadeles interpreted Malcolm’s later speeches — especially his emphasis on land, human rights, and international law — as a mandate to move from rhetoric to organized nation-formation.

Malcolm’s Enduring Influence on the New Afrikan Independence Movement
The broader New Afrikan Independence Movement sees Malcolm not only as a historical figure, but as a living ideological compass. His evolution from religious minister to global revolutionary provided a model for:
• Political transformation
• Pan-African consciousness
• Strategic self-defense
• Linking domestic struggle to global anti-colonial movements
Malcolm X articulated that Black people in America are a colonized nation within a nation. The Republic of New Afrika operationalized that analysis into a formal independence movement.
