STORYLINE:
The old commercial souk and its arched gateway, Bab Al Bahrain, are beloved landmarks in the capital, Manama, attracting both tourists and residents on the small island nation.

The gateway was built in 1949 along the coastline of Manama and once hosted administrative government offices that overlooked the sea.

The building features one massive arch as well as two smaller side arches for pedestrians.

The market offers shoppers everything from popular and modern products to traditional items and antiques.

Textiles, spices, incense, perfumes and souvenirs are on display at the market area, which is also home to several popular cafes.

Tourists visit this site to learn about "traditional trade practices of the past," said Mohammed Bin Khalifa, the director of the National Heritage Department.

He added that the area had once "played a significant role" in people's lives because it was used for both trade and travel.

Over the years, Bab Al Bahrain underwent many restorations.

The souk and its gateway feature several "architectural elements that give the city a distinct character and set it apart from the rest of Bahrain," Bin Khalifa said.
