Thank you, Chennai Corporation, for preserving the historic name of College Road and choosing instead to rename only College Lane in honour of actor Jaishankar.
College Road is not just a name, it is a vital piece of Chennai’s rich cultural and linguistic heritage. The road derives its name from the College of Fort St. George, which functioned from the present-day DPI campus in the early 19th century. This institution was originally established to teach Indian languages to East India Company officials. But its role soon grew far beyond that.
The College became a cradle of the Dravidian linguistic revival, encouraging writing, publishing, and scholarship in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. It was here that F.W. Ellis wrote his legendary "Dravidian proof," asserting that Tamil was not derived from Sanskrit — a foundational moment in the history of South Indian linguistics.
Some of the first dictionaries and lexicons in the Dravidian languages were printed at this very institution. U. Ve. Swaminatha Iyer even referred to it as the Chennai Kalvi Sangam, and his teacher, Meenakshisundaram Pillai, maintained close ties with many of the Tamil professors who worked there.
A road with such deep historical significance should never be erased or renamed. Jaishankar certainly deserves a road in his honour — just not this one.
