Ever wondered how our ability to think and reason evolves as we grow? That’s what Jean Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory explains—how we process information, solve problems, and understand the world at different stages of life."
The Four Stages of Cognitive Development
1️⃣ Sensorimotor Stage (0–2 years) – Learning through senses and movement. Babies explore the world by touching, tasting, and watching. They develop object permanence, realizing things exist even when out of sight.
2️⃣ Preoperational Stage (2–7 years) – Imagination takes center stage. Children use symbols and language but struggle with logic. Egocentrism makes them see the world only from their own perspective.
3️⃣ Concrete Operational Stage (7–11 years) – Logical thinking emerges. Kids understand cause and effect, develop empathy, and grasp concepts like conservation (knowing the amount of liquid stays the same even if poured into a different cup).
4️⃣ Formal Operational Stage (12+ years) – Abstract thinking develops. Teenagers and adults can reason hypothetically, solve complex problems, and think about the future.
Why This Matters
Understanding these stages helps educators, parents, and even leaders adapt their communication and teaching styles. Growth isn’t just about gaining knowledge—it’s about evolving the way we think.
In The 2 AM Code, we explore how self-awareness and adaptability help us break through mental barriers at any stage of life.
