How Long is the SAP Program.

When it comes to commercial trucking, rules and regulations are part of our daily lives. An important one to know about is the Substance Abuse Professionals, or SAP, program.

Before we go over how long the SAP program is, please give this video a thumbs up, hit the notification bell, and subscribe to our channel where we have daily videos to help you successfully navigate compliance.

Now, the SAP program isnt measured in days or months, but rather its a process with specific steps that every driver must complete in order to return to work after violating driver safety prevention and alcohol policies.

First, theres an initial evaluation by a qualified SAP. This step helps assess the nature and extent of the drivers substance abuse issues. This usually takes one to two sessions.

Then, the driver enters a treatment or education program. The length of this depends on the recommendation of the SAP and also the drivers specific needs.

This could be as short as a few weeks, or it could last several months.

Once treatment is finished, theres a follow up evaluation by the SAP. This will generally take another one to two sessions. The goal is to determine if the driver has successfully complied with their recommendations.

Following this, there is a series of random follow up tests that will occur over the next twelve months at minimum. But this period can extend up to five years based on the discretion of the SAP.

To give you some context, the Department of Transportation reports that each year, about five percent of all commercial drivers are subject to these regulations due to policy violations. Thats tens of thousands of drivers who must undergo this process.

The goal, of course, isnt to penalize drivers, but to help ensure the safety of everyone on the road. And its worth noting that drivers who complete the SAP program are more likely to maintain long term sobriety compared to those who dont.

Remember, the SAP programs length isnt a simple matter of time, but a journey through assessment, treatment, follow up evaluation, and continuous testing.
