June 4, 1942 — Battle of Midway.
During the second Japanese attack wave, torpedo bombers from the carrier Hiryū target the American aircraft carrier USS Yorktown.
Anti-aircraft guns from the carrier and escort ships open intense fire. One attacking torpedo bomber is hit and crashes into the sea.
But others press the attack.
Multiple torpedoes are launched toward Yorktown.
Three of them strike the carrier, causing catastrophic flooding and severe damage.
The attack temporarily disables Yorktown and becomes one of the most dramatic moments of the Battle of Midway — the turning point of the Pacific War.
This video recreates the torpedo strike that changed the fate of the carrier.
