Welcome to Friday Night at the Pechanga Pow Wow 2026. After Grand Entry, we move straight into the Head Young Man Fancy Special, honoring Julius Phoenix.

At many pow wows, dancers are selected to represent Head Man, Head Woman, Head Young Man, and Head Young Woman for the pow wow. Once chosen, they are typically given about a year to prepare for their specials. These specials honor not only the dancer, but also their family and the people who played an important role in helping them get there.

It’s common for teens who are aging out of the Teen category and moving into the Adult (18+) division to be honored with a special like this. These moments only happen once, and dancers will travel from near and far to participate and support. Often, handmade items and/or money are given to the winner as part of the tradition.

It’s always a joy to capture Fancy Dancers in motion, especially during specials like this where the energy in the arena is on another level. I hope you enjoyed this one-time event as much as I did filming it.
