The Deadwood Mine began as a small placer prospect in the 1860s, hidden deep in the mountains of central Idaho. In the early 1900s, it developed into a larger operation, producing lead, zinc, silver, and gold.
By 1924, the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Company had taken control and launched major development. They drove tunnels deep into the mountain and built a hydro-powered flotation mill to process ore. At its peak, the mine handled tens of thousands of tons of material, much of it rich in precious metals.
After a slowdown during the Great Depression, the mine saw renewed life in the 1940s. Callahan Zinc-Lead Company reopened operations during World War II. But by the late 1940s, the mine was closed for good.
Over its lifetime, Deadwood produced more than 125,000 tons of ore, including large quantities of gold and silver. Today, its weathered remains lie tucked in the forest near Deadwood Reservoir—a quiet reminder of Idaho’s golden past.
