🎵Waltzing Matilda: Australia’s unofficial national anthem. A beautiful yet tragic tale from Australia’s early settler days about a wanderer who in order to survive, steals a sheep but rather than get caught, drowns himself in a watering hole. 🇦🇺
Recorded live and performed as an encore with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on Dec 5th, 2019
🎥: Todd Rosenberg

List of Aussie terminology:
Swagman: a man who travelled the country looking for work. The swagman's "swag" was a bed roll that bundled his belongings.
Billabong: an oxbow lake (a cut-off river bend) found alongside a meandering river.
Coolibah tree: a kind of eucalyptus tree which grows near billabongs
Jumbuck: a sheep
Billy: a can for boiling water in, usually 1–1.5 litres (2–3 pints)
Tucker bag: a bag for carrying food
Troopers: Aussie policemen
Squatter: Australian squatters started as early farmers who raised livestock on land which they did not have the legal title to use; in many cases they later gained legal use of the land even though they did not have full possession, and became wealthy thanks to these large land holdings. The squatter's claim to the land may be as unfounded as is the swagman's claim to the jumbuck which makes this story all the more tragic.

Lyrics:
Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolibah tree,
And he sang as he watched and waited till his "Billy" boiled,
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me."

Chorus:
Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda,
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me,
And he sang as he watched and waited till his "Billy" boiled,
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me."

Down came a jumbuck to drink at that billabong,
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee,
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag,
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me."

(Chorus)

Up rode the squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred.
Down came the troopers, one, two, and three.
"Whose is that jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me."

(Chorus)

Up jumped the swagman and sprang into the billabong.
"You'll never catch me alive!" said he
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong:
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me."
