Installing An ICF Floor System In Michigan: The Simpson Ledger System

Описание: Explaining one of our methods of installing a floor system in an ICF (Insulated Concrete Form) wall. This is what I call: The Simpson Ledger System.

The process uses several Simpson components:
-Simpson ICF VL6: This piece is cast into the wall, as it has grooves cut before the concrete pour, allowing it to slide in and grab the concrete. Once the pour is made, this piece is flush with the wall's surface.
-Ledger: The video shows a homeowner using blocks to set the ledger to the correct height. An LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) ledger provides one and three-quarter inches of bearing.
-VLAC CW bracket: This bracket clips over the ledger. The CW stands for "composite wood". A W option (VLAC W) might be an inch and a half wide to fit a standard two-by.
-D3 screw: Simpson supplies these self-tapping screws. They are screwed in through the holes in the VLAC bracket and into the plate.

The video shows an example where the homeowner is using floor trusses. They are using a top chord bearing floor truss, which sits right on top of the ledger. The trusses are then nailed or screwed into the sides.

Benefits of Floor Trusses

Floor trusses allow for fitting HVAC, plumbing, and wiring inside. The square openings within the truss structure are called duct chases. Each run will have a duct chase, which typically needs to be in the middle third, but consult with your truss engineer.

Structural Tie-in

A floor truss that would normally go right alongside the wall can be eliminated. This is because the goal is to tie the subfloor into the sidewalls. Tying the subfloor into the wall makes the wall a structural unit from the footing up to the floor system. If the subfloor is not tied in, the wall would be a little more than freestanding and not be strong enough. The OSB subfloor is nailed into the top of the ledger. This process structurally ties the wall into the subfloor diaphragm, creating a much stronger building.
