Dating back hundreds of years, Auld Lang Syne is traditionally sung on New Year's Eve to bid farewell to the old year. The song as we know it today was born when a 1788 poem by Robert Burns (in the Scots language) was set to an existing melody and began to be sung on Hogmanay (Scottish New Years Eve). 'For Auld Lang Syne' literally translates to 'for old long since', and can be understood as 'for old times' sake' or 'for days gone by'.
