Who Is This Camera For? The OM System OM-3

Описание: Who is the OM System OM-3 for? I don't know the M43 system that well, but my guess is that it's a very niche group of photographers with some video needs. I always thought that in the Micro Four Thirds ecosystem, the Panasonic users were mostly video centric, while the Olympus / OM System users were photo centric, and I think to a large degree this is still true. But I felt the flagship OM-1 was clearly targeting sports, wildlife, nature photographers. It was purpose built like a tank, and with a plethora of professional lenses, it was a great compact alternative to APS-C and 35mm camera systems.

The newish OM-3 takes the same stacked sensor and processor from the OM-1 and gives it some vintage film vibes from the very deep catalogue of Olympus film cameras, specifically the OM-1 and the original half frame Pen F cameras. Who is this camera for? I don't know to be honest. I don't think there was a huge group of street photographer M43 photographers, or at least not anymore. However, this camera is fantastic for street photography. Not only does the camera look good, it's well built, has tons of cool features, and has a huge catalogue of native lenses to choose from.

The superpower of the OM-3 for me is the combination of the stacked 20MP BSI CMOS sensor and powerful processor. Natively it's 20MP, but it also has a 50MP hand held and 80MP tripod mount multi-shot mode via sensor shift. This is all done in-camera, which includes JPEG, RAW (ORF) as well as Hi Rez Shot (ORI) files. It also has in camera processed focus stacking, computation LIVE ND mode, and other powerful features, thanks to the stacked sensor's speed. I focused mostly on the 50MP and 80MP sensor shift mode for interesting street photography pictures, as well as high resolution product photography in my studio. I was pretty impressed.

My conclusion on the OM-3? For me, it's a really cool camera. It's not for everyone, but it has cool features that will appeal to various types of photographers. Having a fast stacked 20MP sensor that can also output 50MP and 80MP is useful for product photography, landscape, as well as some creative photography. I felt I needed to spend a bit more time with the camera to fully unleash all its superpowers, but I was impressed with what it was capable of doing. OM System just announced the new 50-200mm f/2.8 (100-400 equiv), showing their commitment to making new lenses for this system, not just recycling older Olympus lens designs. I know this system isn't for everyone, but I did my best to showcase how this camera would work within my own photography and video ecosystem. Let me know if you have any questions.
