U-nine seventy-seven left Kristiansand, Norway on May second, nineteen forty-five. Germany surrendered unconditionally on May seventh. Admiral Dönitz ordered all U-boats to surface, report their positions, and proceed to Allied ports for inspection. Most complied within hours. Some scuttled themselves rather than surrender. A handful tried to run and were hunted down within days.
