The PROBLEM with MYANMAR... (no seat belts)

I've never told this story publicly, but now is the time to share. The last time I came to Myanmar (5 years ago), I became really good friends with a local tour operator named Sai, who sponsored my trip in exchange for a blog post (back when I used to be a blogger).

The post I wrote went viral, and gave him a lot of new clients which he was really thankful for. We remained close friends until I got a devastating email several years ago from a lady (who was on a tour with Sai after reading my blog post). She told me that Sai got in a car crash and passed away. He was not wearing a seat belt.

This memory has haunted me for a long time. Every time I came across the word "Myanmar," I instantly thought about Sai.

And now I'm back here, and enjoying my trip overall... but I can't help but notice the unsafe situation these streets. I took 4 taxis over the last few days and all 4 didn't have seat belts in the back seat. To make matters even more frightening, many drivers on the streets of Yangon are reckless and I was terrified as I sat in the back seat without a seat belt on.

I hope the government of Myanmar sees this video and does something to implement a change. We've already lost Sai, and I hope that nobody else passes away from something that is easily preventable.

That's all I want to say. I do love Myanmar and I will certainly be back again someday, hopefully when I will feel safer getting around town.
