The Seven Colored Earths (also called Chamarel Seven Colored Earth) is a unique geological formation located in the village of Chamarel, in southwest Mauritius, an island nation in the Indian Ocean. Here's a quick overview:
🌈 What It Is:
The Seven Colored Earths is a small area of sand dunes made up of naturally occurring layers of different colors—primarily red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow. What’s remarkable is that the colors do not mix, even when the sand is disturbed or blended manually.
🧪 Why It Happens:
The phenomenon is believed to be the result of volcanic activity. When basaltic lava cooled, it formed clay minerals—mainly iron and aluminum oxides—that weathered into different colors over time:
Iron produces red and brown hues.
Aluminum contributes to blue and purplish tones.
Because these minerals settle differently and repel each other, they create the striped, layered look.
🌍 Location & Tourism:
Located in the Chamarel plain, close to the Chamarel Waterfall.
It's a protected and fenced-off attraction, so visitors view it from platforms.
The site also has giant tortoises, nature trails, and a nearby rum distillery.
🧲 Fun Fact:
If you take different colors of the sand and mix them together, they will eventually separate back into layers. This property has made it a fascinating example of natural geochemical sorting.
