MOLARITY CALCULATION
Molarity is used to express the concentration of a solution. Also known as molar concentration, molarity is the number of moles of solute (the material dissolved) per litre of solution. Be careful not to confuse molality and molarity. Molality's units are often represented by a lower case "m" whereas molarities are often represented by an upper case "M". Although their spellings are similar, molarity and molality cannot be interchanged. Molarity is a measurement of the moles in the total volume of the solution, whereas molality is a measurement of the moles in relationship to the mass of the solvent.
When water is the solvent and the concentration of the solution is low, these differences can be negligible (d = 1.00 g/mL). However, when the density of the solvent is significantly different than 1 or the concentration of the solution is high, these changes become much more evident. The concentration or molarity of a given solute has the following definition: the number of moles of solute per given litre of solution.
If one had a solution made out of 100 grams of sodium chloride in 2.5 liters of solution, and wanted to find out the molarity of that solution, they could start by determining the “formula weight” of sodium chloride.
The formula weight is calculated by adding the atomic weights of the elements together. Sodium chloride is NaCl, so together the atomic weights of its elements are: 35.45 + 22.99 = 58.44. So there’s 58.44g of NaCl per mole.
With the amount of NaCl per mole known, the number of moles in 100 grams of NaCl can be determined simply by using the formula weight and dividing into the 100g of NaCl. Doing this calculation gives you approximately 1.71 moles of NaCl.
