"Siboney" is a dramatic and passionate song composed in 1927 by Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona. Lecuona's talent for composition influenced the Latin American world in a way quite similar to George Gershwin's influence in the United States. In Lecuona's case, his work elevated Cuban music to a legitimate, "classical music" status. Siboney is both the name of a coastal village in Eastern Cuba and of a neighborhood in the Playa borough of Havana. In the song, he sings to Siboney the island of Cuba and his lyrics tell of homesickness and longing to be back home.
Thanks goes out to my dear friend Bud Hedrick, for suggesting that I make an arrangement of this piece for us to play together and include in our guitar slinger friend, Jim Stewart. This arrangement worked out so well that I have added it into my permanent solo repertoire. Over the years, Bud has brought many great songs to my attention and suggested that we play them together. He is always spot on in his choices. I have at least 8 pieces in my repertoire that he has introduced me to over the years. And now I say this: "Thank you Bud Hedrick for taking me on a new journey to enjoy the beautiful Siboney!"
