Grant breaks down the SHOCKING Tyler Biadasz release - entering year 3 of 3-year deal, saves $2.9M ($7.3M if June 1st designation), weakest veteran OL last year per PFF (11th-best center), and 5 theories WHY this happened!
💰 THE CONTRACT & CAP SAVINGS
The Numbers: Biadasz entering year 3 of 3-year deal signed in spring 2024. Would've made $8.3M with $11M cap hit. Cutting him saves $2.9M against cap OR $7.3M if June 1st designation (splits cap hit across 2026 and 2027 with $5.4M dead cap in 2027). One of three young guys with long-term deals alongside Dorance and Luvu.
📉 THE PERFORMANCE ISSUES
The Reality: PFF graded him 11th-best center among guys with 50%+ snaps. Weakest veteran on OL last year (Conerly worst overall but rookie). Grant called out poor performance after multiple games. Placed on IR with knee and ankle injuries on Christmas vs Cowboys - Nick Allegretti finished year at center. Unexpected release - thought they'd give him one more year.
❓ THEORY 1 - KNEE IS DEEP FRIED
The Injury: IR with knee and ankle injuries after Christmas game. Most reasonable theory for unexpected release. HOWEVER, Ben Standig and David Harrison both indicated health was NOT an issue. So if not injury, what is it?
🎥 THEORY 2 - BLOUGH SAW ISSUES ON TAPE
The Coordinator: Peters and Quinn both say coordinators heavily involved in personnel decisions. Blough appears to be true football nerd grinding tape. He was also on staff last year and saw first-hand what was happening. Did Blough identify specific issues that make Biadasz unfit for under-center offense?
💸 THEORY 3 - MAKING TOO MUCH MONEY
The Cost: Biadasz makes $10M/year average which ranks 6TH among all centers. Wasn't playing up to that standard. Team wants to be aggressive in free agency and needs cap space. But this only makes sense if replacement is already on roster - otherwise inviting bidding war.
🔄 THEORY 4 - POSITION CHANGES COMING (MOST LIKELY)
The Options: Chris Paul, Sam Cosmi, or Brandon Coleman could all move to center.
Chris Paul: Centers make less than guards - could re-sign him for less money. Looked great in pass pro but had run-blocking issues. Can he kick inside?
Sam Cosmi: Already switched positions once in NFL career (played tackle for years). Seems least likely option but letting Biadasz go reeks of having obvious solution in place.
Brandon Coleman: They WANT him on the field. Great athletic profile - strong, fast, young, cheap. Got work at center last year as emergency option. Guard experiment didn't work but he was injured. Maybe they think his best days are playing interior and staying healthy.
🚫 THEORY 5 - JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH
The Standard: If AP has made one thing clear, it's protecting Jayden. Won't prioritize health after injuries last year. Team moving to UNDER-CENTER OFFENSE - this matters! Grant refuses to believe AP cut starter under contract for no reason. Biadasz wasn't good enough for what they need.
📊 BOTTOM LINE
Commanders release Tyler Biadasz saving $2.9M (or $7.3M June 1st). 11th-best center per PFF wasn't good enough. 5 theories: knee injury (but insiders say no), Blough saw tape issues, too expensive at $10M/year, position changes with Paul/Cosmi/Coleman moving to center (most likely), or just not good enough for under-center offense protecting Jayden.
