1. Create your design.

I made this design on Bernina V9 Designer Plus, used a cross design from embroidery Library for the center motif, and added mismatched circles of pattern run motif on the edge, to give it a lacey look. I then converted it into an appliqué to be able to have that perfect satin stitch on the edge of the Pall.

2. Prepare your embroidery

Prepare 2 pieces of linen with fusible interfacing, one for the top, the other for the bottom. I have a heat press and used it (it works great) but you can also iron the interfacing.

Place water soluble stabilizer in your hoop.

In the embroidery machine, make a basting stitch around the design, over the stabilizer: this will tell you where you should place your piece of fabric to embroider the Pall Top.

3. Embroider your design.

Embroider the center motif and the decorative edge.

4. Finish the Pall

Remove your hoop from the machine and place the bottom fabric on the back of the hoop, securing it with some painter’s tape.

Place the hoop in the machine and embroider the cutting line (it will also work as a securing stich for the bottom fabric).

Remove the hoop again and fussy cut the top and bottom fabrics around the stitch as close and neat as possible.

Place the hoop in the machine and embroider the tack down stitch and then the satin stich. Remove the hoop, release the stabilizer and trim the excess. Wash away the remaining stabilizer, pat the pall in with a terry cloth towel to absorb the water (do not squeeze it) and iron it in between some light cotton. You can also heat press it at this stage (almost dry).

The process to make a square pall is the same, just with a different design.
