ABOUT:
Alfred Packer: The Man Who Ate His Crew
Alfred Packer set out in the winter of 1873 with five other prospectors, seeking gold in the Colorado wilderness. But the mountains were unforgiving, and as starvation set in, only one man emerged—Packer, claiming his companions had perished in the cold.
His story quickly unraveled when searchers found the bodies, showing signs of butchery. Accused of cannibalism, Packer insisted he only ate the dead to survive. The courts didn’t buy it. In 1883, he was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 40 years in prison.
Yet, even in infamy, Packer became a legend—feared, ridiculed, and even mythologized in folk tales. Some saw him as a ruthless killer, others as a desperate man who did what he had to.
He died in 1907, maintaining his innocence to the end. But his name still lingers in the annals of the Old West, forever tied to one of history’s most chilling tales of survival.
LYRIC:
Haunting Colorado Ballad: Alfred Packer's Chilling Tale of Survival & Mystery
The Colorado wind howled low and deep,
A winter's grip, secrets to keep.
Five men ventured, a mountain's cold embrace,
Seeking fortune, in a desolate place.
Alfred Packer, a name whispered with dread,
Among the pines, where the brave found their bed.
Prospectors' dreams turned to icy despair,
A blizzard's wrath beyond repair.
Food ran short, and courage wore thin,
The fight for survival began deep within.
The snow fell heavy, a shroud of white,
Burying truth beneath the night.
The fire burned low, the silence grew loud,
A desperate hunger, the cold wrapped like a shroud.
No prayers could save them, no stars gave their glow,
Just frostbitten fingers and whispers in the snow.
Alfred Packer, his tale took a turn,
In the frozen wild, where morality burns.
He walked alone, through a land cruel and vast,
The shadows of his choices forever would last.
His words painted pictures of frost and despair,
But doubt lingered heavy in the mountain air.
Was it the storm, or his soul that gave way?
The line between man and beast began to fray.
The law came swift, the gavel fell hard,
A tale of justice in a land battle-scarred.
Accused and judged, his name was sealed,
In the court of whispers, his fate revealed.
The mountains stood silent, their secrets well-kept,
While echoes of hunger through centuries crept.
So raise a glass to the lost and forlorn,
To dreams in the frost, and lives weathered and worn.
To Alfred Packer, his legend carved in stone,
In the heart of the wild, where the cold stands alone.
A chilling ballad, forever to repeat,
Of survival's shadow and the cold mountain beat.
