🔴 Mercedes has been at the centre of every major technical controversy in 2026. Compression ratio loophole. Customer team data dispute. ADUO timing debate. And now — the front wing.
Video analysis from the Chinese Grand Prix revealed something that immediately divided the paddock. The W17's front wing does not close at the same speed at every corner. At Shanghai's Turn 14 — the long, heavy braking zone — the flap appeared to close in approximately 800 milliseconds. The legal limit is 400 milliseconds. That is twice what the rules allow.
But here's what makes this more than just a social media controversy. FormulaTecnica, one of Italy's most respected technical F1 publications, confirmed on March 23rd that the FIA is now examining the legality of this system. Their words: "La legalità di questo sistema è al momento in bilico" — the legality of this system is currently in the balance.
The engineering logic is brilliant. At slow corners, the wing closes fast — shifting balance forward immediately for grip. At high-speed braking zones, it closes slowly — keeping the car in low-drag configuration deeper into the stop. Corner by corner balance optimisation that no other team appears to have achieved.
The question is whether it is genius or a breach. Because if the W17 has been operating outside the 400ms limit since Australia, three race results — including Russell's win in Melbourne and Antonelli's victory in China — could face retrospective review.
The FIA has the sensor data. Mercedes has not commented. Suzuka starts Friday.
