A woman in Kaohsiung got the scare of her life after buying breakfast from a local shop in Zuoying District. She was about to tuck into her meal when she found a red envelope, and inside the envelope was a paper figurine. Thinking that it was a traditional funerary effigy, she posted about the scary finding online. But it turns out the origami had nothing to do with funerals or death. It was actually a hand-folded God of Wealth figurine made by the owners of the breakfast shop to thank patrons and wish them a happy new year.
A woman was confused to find a red envelope in her breakfast takeaway. But she was scared to death by what she found inside.
It’s a paper origami, dressed in red and with a black hat, holding a NT$1 coin. Thinking it was a funerary effigy, she posted about her terrifying experience online.
We went to the breakfast shop, located in Kaohsiung’s Zuoying District to ask about the incident. It turns out it’s all a misunderstanding. The paper figurine was one of 2,000 origami the owners folded themselves, meant to represent the God of Wealth to bring good fortune to customers… not as an omen of death.

I’m a little hurt. I folded these in my spare time. It’s not like every shop gives these out to customers. In the first year we did this, we even got them smoke-cleansed at the temple.
Each origami was folded by hand, and got a smiley face penned in. This couple has been making and giving them out for 10 years in a row now.

We wanted to give back to our patrons for the new year. We were going to stop in the second year, but our customers asked us about them, so we’ve kept giving them out ever since.
Anyone who buys breakfast here is entitled to a free paper God of Wealth. Though the kind gesture might have been misinterpreted, the owners are happy that most appreciate the little gift.
