Astrochemistry is the study of molecules outside of the earth. More than 250 different molecules have now been discovered in interstellar clouds, some similar to molecules on earth, others very exotic. The gas-phase molecules are mainly neutral species although both positively-charged and negatively-charged species have been detected. From the concentrations of molecules detected in clouds, Astrochemists can understand the diverse chemistry that occurs both in the gas and on the grains as well as processes that produce molecules and dust mantles from precursor atoms in stars, eventually leading to the production of stars and extra-solar planets.
In this talk, He will discuss the history of astrochemistry, how and where molecules in space are detected, and the chemistry occurring between these molecules, which allows Astrochemists to understand how larger species are synthesized, and how eventually planets and new stars form.
