Rockland County Vietnam Veterans Watchfires - Piermont
Memorial Day Watchfires are sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans of Rockland Chapter 333 and are held annually throughout Rockland County to remember soldiers who are in service abroad and the troops who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
The origins of Watchfires in the Hudson Valley dates back to the Revolutionary War and were used by the Colonists along the Hudson River to alert residents that the British were approaching.
The watch fires were lit on May 29 and burn for 24 hours at three locations: Bowline Point Park in Haverstraw, the top of Clausland Mountain in Orangeburg, and the east end of the Piermont Pier.
