A week before our trip, hotels inside Death Valley National Park were fully booked. Available hotels are about 50 miles away. Thus, we decided to make a one-day trip. We began our trip from the South end of 178. From junction 127, it is about 54 miles from Badwater Basin.
Areas around Badwater Basin (especially the South) give the best super bloom experience! Even without the super bloom, scenic on Badwater road is breath taking - The salt flats, the colorful mountains (red, green, black, white), and the absent of dense population makes me feel like I am driving on another planet - Mars. The Badwater Basin itself (the hottest place in North America) is one of a kind that worth our 5-hour drive, one-way road trip from home.
About 22 miles into 178, we start seeing fields of mainly yellow Desert Gold and purple Sand Verbena. After we turned right onto Badwater Rd, we drove for about 5 minutes, then, stopped for the first flower field. From now on, flowers are everywhere. It's only the mater of more colors, more intense or less.
It's hard to capture the deep purple flowers in the field because they blend in with the deep green and ground color. Around Ashford Junction, there are couple areas that has denser, deep purple mix with yellow flowers.
At Ashford Mill Ruins, better fields of yellow flowers are on both sides of the Rd. You should stop here. However, the best is yet to come.
A few miles before Badwater Basin, we experienced the best super bloom effects. Fields of flowers are on both sides of the road. On one side, we have salt flats as the backdrop. On the other side, we have mountains as the backdrop. It's breath taking. No house, no population, no garbage, ... This is "Death" valley, the hottest place in North America, it's like we are on Mars with other fellow Mars' visitors.
Continue driving, we saw lots of cars parking along side of the road right before Badwater Basin parking lot because it was full.
After Badwater Basin, we still see the super bloom here and there. However, they are not as super as we saw earlier.
About 15 minutes driving North on 190, we stopped at a field of purple flowers. This is the best purple flower field we have seen on our trip, and the last flower field we visited because from here, flowers are less intense or none. We continue driving North on 190. It is much greener along the road than previously. There are recreational areas, and crowded people which was like we were back to civilization. At some point, there was a gas station, if you are low in gas, make sure you stop there because shortly after we turned left onto 190, junction 374, we were back to the desert wild again. There is no gas station for another 1 and half hour.
Combining our experience and weather forecast, we think super bloom along Badwater road would last until the end of March 2026.
That's all.
