Elvis Presley - Angel - From First Take to the Master

If there is one common theme amongst most of the songs within Elvis' 1961 movie "Follow That Dream" it is that they are almost all at an upbeat tempo and therefore quite bouncy and lively. The final song in the movie, "Angel", although not quite as fast as the other tracks, is still at a decent tempo despite being the only ballad style song on the soundtrack.
It is a beautifully performed track from the pen of composers Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennett and showcases the lovely high voice of Elvis' long time soprano, Millie Kirkham. It is the only song from this single day soundtrack session on 2 July 1961 at RCA's studio B in Hollywood, for the movie which still has it's stereo master in existence as all of the others have since been inexplicably lost.
The master was completed in six tracks, and although the master was numbered seven, this was because take three was missed by mistake, meaning they went straight from two to four! After completion of the final take, there must have been some doubt in the minds of Elvis and those involved about something with the master. As a result, Elvis’ vocal was removed and he then attempted to record a vocal overdub although after two long false starts this was abandoned. This meant that the original take seven would be used as the RCA and movie master.

As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
