📢 BIG UPDATE from Government of India – Sanchar Saathi Now MANDATORY on All Phones!
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has officially issued a directive to all smartphone manufacturers and importers—every new mobile handset sold in India must now come with the ‘Sanchar Saathi’ app pre-installed. This applies to brands like Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and every other company selling phones in India.
According to the directive, the app must be visible at first use and its core functionalities cannot be disabled. Mobile companies have 90 days to ensure compliance for all newly manufactured or imported devices.
A Hindustan Times report quotes a DoT official clarifying that the rumour that this app “cannot be deleted” is baseless. The app is aimed at helping users report and block lost mobile phones, check fraudulent or malicious links, verify the number of SIMs issued in their name, and view trusted bank contact details.
🔍 But there’s more — and this is where the controversy begins.
Reports recently revealed a secret memo that was first sent privately to smartphone companies. This memo got leaked, and then Reuters broke the news publicly.
Now, after days of speculation, the Indian government has officially confirmed through a PIB press release that it wants:
✔️ Sanchar Saathi pre-installed on all new phones
✔️ The same app pushed to OLD PHONES via software updates
This comes just days after reports that the government also wants SIM Binding to be implemented on WhatsApp and other messaging apps.
⚠️ Why are people concerned?
While the government says these moves are meant to enhance user safety and curb digital fraud, many experts believe these steps can give authorities deeper access to personal devices.
Questions being raised:
Will this increase government monitoring?
Will privacy weaken further despite official assurances?
How will SIM Binding affect user freedom across messaging apps?
These are concerns making the entire update highly controversial.
📌 What do you think about this decision?
Is it a step toward better security or a threat to digital privacy in India?
