If you have chat enabled in Gmail, you see that there is a chat section usually near the bottom of the left hand panel in your inbox.

Depending in your settings in Gmail, this section may be in the right hand side of the inbox
This guide will work equally well for both.

You find a list of all your Google contacts that you have chatted with in the chat panel.

To block any user, I need to firstly move my mouse to that contact.
You’ll see there are three dots shown to the right of that contact
If I click on that, you’ll see a number of extra options are shown.
To block this user, I’ll move my mouse to the Block & Report option.
Before clicking on this it’s important to understand what blocking a contact actually does.

The person you block will not be able to message you directly.
The person you block can’t tell that you have blocked them
Any links the person sent you before you blocked then will still be active.
Any messages the person sends to spaces or groups that you are jointly part of will be hidden - you can choose to unhide any you want to view
If you do want to send a message to the person you blocked in the future, you will need to unblock them first.

Returning to our inbox, I’ll click on the option to block a contact in Google chat.
A window is then displayed that confirms that the user you have chosen to block won’t be able to send chat messages to you directly.
This box also gives you an option to send the last 50 messages shared between you and the contact to Google for review.
You may want to do this if you want to report someone for abuse.
If you don’t want to do that, click into the checkbox to uncheck it.

To finally block that contact, click on the large blue Block button.

And Gmail confirms that the contact has now been blocked.
