How to Become an EIT in California Without an Engineering Degree

Описание: Can you become an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) in California—and begin building an engineering career—without first earning a bachelor’s degree in engineering in the United States?

In some cases, yes. This video explains the California EIT certification process, the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and how engineering education, engineering-related work experience, or a combination of both may provide a pathway toward certain engineering-track positions.

I also share my experience as an immigrant whose financial circumstances prevented me from completing a U.S. bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. Many immigrants, internationally educated professionals, engineering technicians, and career changers face similar barriers. Under current California requirements, an EIT applicant must pass the appropriate NCEES FE exam and have three years or more of college-level engineering education, engineering-related work experience, or a combination of both totaling at least three years.

EIT certification is optional. It is not a PE license, does not replace a bachelor’s degree in every situation, and does not guarantee employment or eligibility for professional licensure. Requirements vary by state and employer and may change over time.
