Liaquat Ali Khan (born: Unknown) is a brave freedom fighter of bangladesh's freedom struggle. He was given the title of Veer Uttam by the Government of Bangladesh for his bravery in the War of Independence.
Birth and education
Liaquat Ali Khan was born in Amlapara on Sarai Road under Bagerhat municipality in Bagerhat district. His father's name is Atahar Ali Khan and his mother's name is Aziza Khatun. His wife's name is Najma Anwar Begum. They have a daughter, a son.
Career
Liaquat Ali Khan was working in Pakistan (then West Pakistan) in 1971. When the liberation war started, he came to Bangladesh at the end of May talking about his father's illness. A few days later, he went to India and joined the liberation war. A few days later, he was given the charge of as the adjutant of the first East Bengal Regiment of the regular force. In 1975, a compulsory retirement was given from the Bangladesh Air Force in the Ku Counter-Cur incident. He later worked in the Middle East. He then worked as an pilot on a flight to Bangladesh.
Role in Liberation War
On November 26, 1971, a significant war broke out in Gauripur in Kanaighat upazila of Sylhet. The police station headquarters was located on the banks of surma river on Jaintapur-Jockeyganjroad. Kanaighat was very important militaryally for both the Liberation Army and the Pakistan Army in 1971 for locational reasons. There was a strong position of the Pakistan Army in Kanaighat. They had 31 Punjab regiments engaged in defence. There were also militias and razakars. This was the front defence line of the Pakistan Army at the end of November. At that time, the forward areas of Kanaighat were occupied by the freedom fighters of Zakiganj, Atgram and Chargram. After capturing Jokiganj, Atgram and Chargram, the freedom fighters continued to move towards Sylhet. Liaquat Ali Khan was in this group of freedom fighters. They reached Gauripur two miles away from Kanaighat police station headquarters on November 25. They were divided into a few groups. They stayed at different places in Gauripur to attack Kanaighat. In the early hours of November 26, the Pakistan Army suddenly attacked a group of freedom fighters. In such a situation, there is no other way open except counter-attack. The freedom fighters bravely fought the attack by the Pakistan Army. But even after fighting heroics, their condition became fragile. Mahbubur Rahman (Bir Uttam)was the captain of the affected freedom fighters. He was firmly dealing with attacks with his comrades. But at one point he was shot dead by Pakistani soldiers. In this situation, Liaquat Ali Khan was given the responsibility of captain on the battlefield. At one point he was also injured by enemy firing. He continued to fight despite being injured.
