This From the Frontlines episode focuses on Military Sexual Trauma and why it is not rare, but deeply underreported. VA data shows that about 1 in 3 women and 1 in 50 men report experiencing MST, yet those numbers reflect only part of the reality. Many survivors do not report due to fear of retaliation, disbelief, career impact, or loss of control over their story. Guard and Reserve members often face additional barriers because they move between military and civilian systems. MST is strongly connected to long-term mental health outcomes, including PTSD, depression, substance use, eating disorders, and suicide risk. This message centers survivors and explains why trust and safety matter more than statistics alone.
