Kirby-Bauer (KB) disc-diffusion method was routinely used to determine in vitro susceptibility profile of bacterial pathogens to antibiotics through measuring the zone of no bacterial growth on agar plates. Despite being a helpful screening tool, KB method only provides a qualitative interpretation (bacterium is considered to be susceptible, Intermediate or Resistant to a particular antibiotic) and doesn’t tell us the exact concentration of antibiotic needed to achieve a therapeutic level. Broth microdilution, most commonly used method in Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories nowadays, utilizes Minimal inhibitory concertation (MIC) to precisely determine the concentration of antimicrobial required to inhibit growth of a pathogen.
The main objective of this webinar is to assist our veterinarians with interpreting an antimicrobial susceptibility profile for particular pathogens and create and justify an appropriate antimicrobial treatment plan.
