A behind the scenes look at the making of the upcoming animation short,
Magistrate and Uzu: Babbling Brook
I usually build my atmosphere out of darkness. Starting from black and then slowly adding light to ‘sculpt’ out the figures and landscape. For this scene I challenged myself to create a daylight world, a green landscape filled with light and life.
Based on a short story by Kathleen Adamson that featured water as the key element, I had to find a material that would allow me to paint a little babbling brook flowing by. Who knew hair gel could be such a beautiful thing?
I wanted this scene to feel full of life and possibility so it was important to create a sense of vastness in the landscape, the foreground extending into a misty impossible distance. Three sheets of glass from my multiplane animation stand turned vertically became the oil painted backdrop that I work extensively to seamlessly blend with the textured foreground elements of moss, rocks, wool and candlesticks.
I edited this together using the sounds and music I listened to and generated while working.
STAY TUNED for the upcoming short photo-poem that all this work flows towards:
Magistrate and Uzu: Babbling Brook
