Across Africa, a pattern is emerging: when a constitution limits power, excuses are found to stretch it. Yesterday it was 'projects delayed by covid'. In other countries, it's "unfinished reforms" or "national stability." Whatever the reason, the result is the same - citizens lose their right to renew leadership through the ballot. The Economist recently described how some leaders have perfected this script - rewriting constitutions, weakening institutions, and personalizing power.
Zimbabwe must not join that trend. Our constitution is our social contract. It does not pause for pandemics, nor bend to convenience. When we defend term limits, we defend the people's right to choose - every time.
