Performance Notes:

Saint-Saëns wrote his “Carnival of the Animals” in 1886. The scoring is unusual as it is for two pianos along with a small orchestra. This movement, “The Swan,” is written for just two pianos with cello. While the soloist plays the swan, gliding along elegantly with the slow melody, the first piano imitates the rippling water with running sixteenth-notes. The second piano, optional here, is believed to represent, with slowly rolled chords, the swan’s webbed feet paddling it through the water.
Little has been altered from the original scoring. One small addition is to include, as it is common performance practice, a ritard. and a tempo at measures 17 and 18. The other smaller change is to add slurs which are more idiomatic on a brass instrument. To distinguish the editorial markings from the original, these are shown as dashed phrase marks. As mentioned above, while the second piano part does add a lovely component to the piece, it may be omitted for performance.

Each of the six versions (C (High Octave), B-flat (High Octave), F, E-flat, C (Low Octave), and B-flat (Low Octave)) includes parts in every practical key and clef for that version. “Low Octave” and “High Octave” parts are optimized for low and high brass respectively, and the singular difference is in the piano voicing for each.
