Small Block Chevrolet V8
Introduced 1955 as Chevrolet's first lightweight overhead-valve V8.
Cast iron block, 90-degree V-angle, pushrod design.
Factory displacements: 262, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, 400 cubic inches.
Most produced: 350 ci (5.7L).
Bore x stroke (350): 4.00" x 3.48".
Compression ratios: 8.5:1 to 11:1+ (year/application dependent).
Horsepower range (factory): 195 hp (early trucks) to 370+ hp (high-performance like L46, LT-1).
Torque: 300-400 lb-ft typical in performance versions.
Firing order: 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.
Carburetion: 2-barrel or 4-barrel (Rochester, Holley, Carter).
Ignition: Points (early), HEI distributor (1970s+).
Oil system: Wet sump, full-pressure.
Cooling: Conventional water pump, thermostat.
Transmission pairings: 3-speed manual, 4-speed manual, Powerglide, Turbo-Hydramatic automatic.
Used in: Passenger cars, Corvettes, Camaros, Chevelles, trucks, vans from 1955-2003 (Gen I/II).
