COACH CONNECT Ep 7: Difficult Topics in Coaching - Trauma-Informed Coaching and Suicide Prevention 🌍
In this important episode, we dive into two sensitive but crucial topics for coaches: trauma-informed coaching and suicide prevention. As coaches, we often support clients through life’s toughest challenges, and understanding these areas is key to providing safe, compassionate guidance.
✨ Special Guest: Rachel Barach We’re honored to welcome Rachel Barach, Founding Program Director of the Community as Medicine Health Coach Training Program, NBC-HWC, and Certified QPR Instructor. Rachel is passionate about making quality health coaching accessible to all and brings a wealth of experience in trauma-informed practices, cultural relevance, empathy, and suicide prevention in health coaching. She serves as the Director of HR & Training at Open Source Wellness, a nonprofit in Oakland dedicated to behavioral health and wellness through a "Community As Medicine" approach.
In this episode, Rachel shares the origins of Open Source Wellness, a nonprofit community-based coaching program that brings people together to work on their health goals, eat and exercise as a community, and support one another. The program offers a sliding scale for coach training in order to increase both representation in health coaching and access to health coaching, and provides continuing education credits to advance coaching skills often. Through her work, Rachel has identified a growing need for education on trauma-informed coaching and suicide prevention to help coaches support clients while understanding the boundaries of their role.
We’ll cover:
The history of Open Source Wellness and its commitment to accessible care
Trauma-informed coaching: why it’s vital and how to practice it
Suicide prevention in coaching: understanding scope limitations and working with healthcare teams
Practical strategies for supporting clients through difficult topics
