Today we look at a very common situation with people BRAND NEW to jiu-jitsu (gi and no gi): trying to open the closed guard using the point of the elbow inside the thigh. You may have been cautioned against doing this so that you’re not seen as a bad training partner - and that’s definitely a good reason NOT to do it. But there are a few other reasons it doesn’t make sense. First of all, there are more efficient ways to get the guard open and start your passing. We always advocate standing up to open the legs, but even if you elect to work from your knees you’ve got better grips you can use. Next, and most urgently, you’re susceptible to a very easy triangle from your partner (and if you’re the person on the bottom, you’ve got a quick counter to their uncomfortable and annoying elbow pressure). Take a look at the perils and some alternatives. Thanks for watching.
