Join me on another raw walk as I explore Uley Long Barrow with my kids, also known as Hetty Pegler’s Tump, one of Gloucestershire’s most fascinating prehistoric sites.

This Neolithic chambered tomb, dating back around 5,000 years, sits on the Cotswold escarpment and offers not only sweeping views across the Severn Vale but also a direct link to Britain’s ancient past. The long barrow was built as a communal burial site, containing multiple chambers where the remains of early farming communities were placed. Excavations in the 19th century revealed human bones, flint tools, and pottery fragments, shedding light on the lives—and deaths—of the people who raised these impressive monuments.

The name “Hetty Pegler’s Tump” comes from Hester Pegler, the 17th-century owner of the nearby land, whose family’s association with the site gave it its local nickname. Today, the barrow is cared for by English Heritage and remains a place of quiet reflection, historical intrigue, and timeless atmosphere.

This walk takes you around and inside the tomb itself, giving a sense of the structure’s scale and the enduring presence of the ancestors who built it.
