In this video, Col (Ret) Leon Ferreira recounts how soldiers deployed on patrol for extended periods of time in the bush of Southern Angola during the Angolan Bush War would find ways to relax and relieve boredom in between combat situations. Temporary bases set up along the Kunene river provided a temporary respite for the soldiers - a chance to collect water, wash, cook a hot meal, and refresh before continuing out on patrol.

To relieve the monotony of military life, soldiers would find ways to amuse themselves with activities such as playing cards. This was particularly popular as it could easily be done in small groups and did not require a lot of equipment. Fishing was another popular activity, with soldiers using grenades to catch fish to cook over an open fire. Books and letters from home also provided a way to escape the realities of war and the ongoing situations they found themselves in.

The video highlights the importance of taking a break from the challenges of war, even if only for a short while, to rejuvenate and refresh. By indulging in leisure activities and hobbies, soldiers were able to relieve the stresses of war and bond with their comrades.
