Sayward BC – Early Life & Origins | Part 1
Nestled along the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, Sayward has a deep and layered history shaped by the land, the sea, and the people who first called it home.
In this first part of the series, we explore the early life of the Sayward area, long before modern roads or development. For thousands of years, the region around the Salmon River and Kelsey Bay was home to Kwakwakaʼwakw and K’ómoks First Nations, who relied on salmon runs, shellfish, and dense coastal forests for survival.
European settlement began in the late 1800s when the community was known as Port Kusum, accessible only by water. Early settlers lived remotely, depending on boats and steamships for supplies and connection to the outside world. A trading post and post office established in the early 1900s helped form the foundation of the community.
This video blends historic still photos with cinematic drone footage, showing the landscapes that shaped daily life and revealing how Sayward’s natural setting influenced its beginnings.
