Medat | The Path of a Blood Sample Through the Laboratory System – At the Hospital

We begin on the ward in the hospital. The ward staff makes a request for a patient to have a blood test.

Medat's Order Entry form is used to select the requirements for the analysis. A barcode printer then prints out two stickers. The employee applies the stickers to the two blood collection tubes before taking samples from the patient. By applying the barcodes, the tubes are now clearly identifiable. The samples are immediately transported to the laboratory by pneumatic tubes.

When they arrive at the laboratory, the tubes are placed on a rack and scanned to register them in the system. From now on, the samples are transported via a conveyor system. In the first step, the tubes are decapped by a machine.

Analyzers then use various devices to examine the blood samples. Our Medat laboratory information system sends all the requirements for the examination to the analyzer, and the corresponding measurement results are returned. In the case of measured values that require urgent treatment, a laboratory doctor immediately calls the ward physician.

After the samples have undergone all the testing at the laboratory, the tubes are resealed and stored in a refrigerator. The storage position is recorded on the electronic filing system.

A doctor from the laboratory checks the measurement results and validates the findings, which are then sent electronically to the hospital ward. The ward staff can then read the findings
and discuss them with the ward physician. On his ward round, the doctor has access to a tablet, which provides him with information about all the findings.

Electronic billing, including ICD codes, is processed in the relevant controlling department at the hospital. The hygiene department receives a report from the Medat laboratory information system on any necessary measures to take. Finally, if required, a report can be issued to the health department in accordance with the Infection Protection Act.
