here is a whole house fan system I installed in my house. similar to the quiet cool systems that cost over $1000.
2 gable fans (Home depot) $84 - 1650 cfm each.
12" insulated duct - $46 (I had some left over from last job)
2 - 14x12 reducers - $25 on Homedepot.com
2 - 12" butterfly dampers (online) $20
2 - 14x14 x12 ceiling boxes homedepot.com 22$
aluminum tape
can of expanding insulating foam
I used some spacers (1/2 plywood) between the reducer and gable fan then taped it and foamed it. connected to the ducting. put butterfly dampers on ceiling boxes with some room to open and close without hitting the insulated duct.
To finish it off, I will get a 30x20 grille and glue some magnets on it and stick it on the ceiling.
Works awesome and you almost cant hear a thing, SUPER quiet because the duct work goes up and points the fan away into the attic. I guess you could get creative and connect the gable fan and reducer RIGHT to the ceiling box so it vents straight up into attic. Probably still wouldnt be as loud as a 30 or 36" house fan.
I love doing things myself :-)
