Dr. Dhaval Desai, an Atlanta-based internal medicine and pediatrics physician, shares his path from studying economics and Spanish and teaching high school Spanish to training in med-peds and becoming a hospitalist and hospitalist group director at Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital. He describes the demands of clinical and administrative leadership, COVID-era burnout and mental health treatment, and his advocacy work tied to the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes Foundation and his memoir, "Burning Out on the COVID Front Lines."

After being rejected for a chief wellbeing officer role and experiencing institutional limits on physician voice, he worked with an executive coach and resigned, recognizing physician replaceability and the “loyalty trap.” He explains his pivot into direct primary care by purchasing a retiring physician’s practice, how the model reduces bureaucracy and supports burnout prevention, and why independent coaching and physician mental health support matter.
