The barn swallow's nest is a characteristic, open-top structure in the shape of a cup or cup, made of mud and clay mixed with the bird's saliva. The inner part is lined with soft materials such as hair, bristles, grasses and feathers.
Main features of the swallow nest:
Location: Swallows build their nests almost exclusively inside buildings
or under covered structures, unlike the house martin. Typical places are: Stables and barns (preferred due to easy access to mud and insects), garages, sheds, sheds, attic, under bridges or viaducts
Any other covered spaces with access to the outside
Material: The main building materials are lumps of mud and clay, which birds collect in their beaks and glue together with sticky saliva. Birds often collect this material after rain.
Shape: The nest has the shape of an open, shallow cup, glued to a vertical wall or ceiling beam. The interior is carefully lined with soft materials that provide warmth and comfort to eggs and chicks. These birds often return to the same nesting site in subsequent years and can even repair and reuse old nests.
