As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly widespread, there remains an important role for well-trained cadres of human graders. Their role can help serve as the basis for local comparisons to validate AI systems and may be a less costly alternative to AI where the price of access is high. During this live webinar, we will discuss a novel alternative to AI screening for glaucoma: training non-ophthalmic graders (nurses, internists, or even persons with no medical background) to recognize and refer glaucoma based on image review and a self-paced, 5-hour online Cybersight course. We will review evidence from a published paper, based on research in Orbis International’s Vietnamese DR project, which demonstrates that trainees completing the course acquire good accuracy in recognizing glaucoma. We will then discuss how this training course has served as the centerpiece of a novel model of African glaucoma screening in Eswatini. (Level: Intermediate)
