Two snowmobilers found dead after falling through ice in northern Michigan

Описание: Two men were found dead after their snowmobiles fell through the ice on Round Lake in Mason County's Sheridan Township, according to the Mason County Sheriffs Office.

The two men have been identified as Daniel Meyers, 65 years of age from Grand Haven Michigan and Jason Aemmer, 49 years of age, also from Grand Haven Michigan.

The incident occurred early Sunday morning, December 14, after the two went missing while snowmobiling on trails in Lake County.

It was believed, through family of the missing, the two may have been snowmobiling on trails in Lake County and the two had not been heard of for several hours prior, the sheriffs office indicated.

Emergency crews were notified at 12:30 a.m., and a search was initiated by the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

By 4:30 a.m., the search expanded to eastern Mason County, where tracks led to Round Lake.

A searcher located snowmobile tracks entering onto Round Lake off Sugar Grove Road, in Mason County’s Sheridan Township, and through a further search, did not show those tracks leaving the lake.

The search continued and what appeared to be a snowmobile helmet was seen out several hundred yards offshore on the ice, the sheriffs office said.

A drone later confirmed a hole in the ice and a helmet at the site.

Rescue efforts were delayed by darkness and heavy snow, but the Michigan State Police Dive Services Team and Mason County Sheriff's Office Dive Team said they eventually recovered the bodies in approximately six feet of water.

An MSP diver fell through the ice, but was properly tethered to another diver, and was pulled from the ice unharmed.

During this operation the victims were both found.

Law enforcement said they recovered the bodies of a 65-year-old Grand Haven man along with a 49-year-old Grand Haven man.

Both bodies were recovered in approximately 6 feet of water.

Two snowmobiles were also found submerged under the ice.
