The Asian Football Confederation announced the Asian Nations League, an Asian copy of the UEFA Nations League. They have not released any further plans or details, including where it will be hosted, which nations will take part, and how the group stages will operate. Asia's size means that this is a hotly speculated topic as some countries may find the longer distances more difficult. Whilst some countries those in the Middle East or ASEAN may find it easy to find opponents nearby, some countries like Mongolia may find it difficult to find good opponents close to them. Meanwhile, Japan will have the opposite problem. Because the skill gap between Japan and other Asian countries is so large, Japan will feel frustrated having to play games against lesser opponents. The AFC Nations League could offer a lucrative path for nations to enter the World Cup or Asian Cup. Countries like the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and more, will certainly be excited at this opportunity. Finally, I discuss the role of New Zealand.
