Meghalaya has been placed on high alert in response to the ongoing eviction drive in Assam, with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday instructing all district administrations—particularly those along the Assam border—to remain vigilant and report any cross-border movements without delay.
“Today, I chaired a review meeting where we issued specific instructions to maintain heightened alertness, especially in areas bordering Assam and those near the eviction sites,” said Chief Minister Sangma following a high-level meeting.
The meeting was attended by the Chief Secretary, senior officials from the Home and Political Departments, and Deputy Commissioners from across the state, to assess any potential impact of the evictions in Assam. The main objective of the review was to evaluate any possible repercussions for Meghalaya and to prevent any infiltration into the state as a result of the eviction operations.
The Chief Minister stressed that the state government is in regular contact with the Deputy Commissioners, ensuring that they are working in close coordination with block-level officials, police personnel, village defence parties, traditional leaders, and local NGOs.
This coordinated effort aims to ensure a seamless flow of information and to protect against any unauthorised movement into Meghalaya prompted by the eviction drive in Assam.
